Pyramidal as a young tree, maturing to a rounded canopy. Dark green leaves have a whitish underside, fall color is yellowish-brown to russet-red. Broad leaves have shallow lobes or blunted teeth. Acorns are on long stalks, scaled caps with frilly edges cover a third to a half of the acorn. Mature trees have deeply ridged bark. Tolerant of moist soils and well-drained areas. Native.
